This is called Schlieren photography, a technique that makes air pressure changes visible to the human eye. To capture this, physicists use an incredibly precise optical system. They aim a point source of light at a large parabolic mirror, perfectly aligning the beam with the edge of a razor blade before it hits the camera lens.
