A beautiful day at Wick Harbour! A brief history of the harbor: WICK (from the old Norse “VIK” – a bay). The earliest harbour works began in 1803 to exploit the huge seasonal herring fishing. Read in full: http://bit.ly/2qdi8HE. #Caithness #Scotland | Mackays Hotel, Wick

Situated dramatically on the Caithness coastline, historical accounts once suggested the presence of two distinct castles—Castle Sinclair and Castle Girnigoe. However, recent archaeological research has confirmed that from the mid-1400s, when the existing Norse fortalice was remodeled and extended, it functioned as a single castle.Alterations were made by each successive generation until 1680, when it was deliberately partially destroyed. Given that both names have been in use for over three cen

Old Keiss Castle, up on the cliffs of Caithness in northern Scotland, has seen a lot over the centuries. It was built in the early 1600s by George Sinclair of Keiss, and what’s left today is a dramatic ruin overlooking the North Sea. I filmed this on a cloudy, windy day — dozens of crows circling above, waves crashing below. It’s one of those places that remind you how tough life must have been here, and how long Scotland’s history really is. #scottishcastle #visitscotland #hiddenscotland #scotl

He was held there for seven years, after which his father fed him a diet of salted beef, with nothing to drink, so that he eventually died insa
