In Jingju, or Peking opera circles, there is a popular saying: “A little recitation is as good as much singing,” and this denotes the importance of recitation in the operatic performance. There are two kinds of recitation in Jingju: lines spoken in Beijing dialect, called jing bai (京白), and rhymed lines, called yun bai (韵白).
